The best male tennis stars are featured this week at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells 2011. This is the first of nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in the tennis calendar. Last year, nearly 340,000 viewers flocked at the Coachella Valley to witness the 12-day tennis event, thus setting a record to be the first tourney aside from the Grand Slams to overtake the 300,000 mark.
Leading the men’s field is current world number one Rafael Nadal who’s back in action after a five-week break to recover from injury. The two-time champion aims to improve on his semifinal finish last year (beaten by eventual titlist Ivan Ljubicic).
World number two Roger Federer is chasing his 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. The three-time Indian Wells champion will have a chance to improve on his ranking points if goes past the fourth round this year.

Nadal to play Bemelmans in Davis Cup singles
Rafael Nadal will play Ruben Bemelmans on Friday’s opening day of the Davis Cup World Group match between Spain and Belgium.
Sixth-ranked David Ferrer will play the opening match for Spain against Xavier Malisse on Friday on the hard court of the 6,500-capacity Spiroudome in southern Charleroi. The 51st-ranked Malisse is the only Belgian player ranked in the top 100, while Spain has three in the top 10, including No. 9 Fernando Verdasco.
Bemelmans is ranked 144th in the world and lost in straight sets to Nadal last year in Bangkok. Nadal is playing his first top-level match since injuring his thigh at the Australian Open.
Doubles are set for Saturday and reverse singles for Sunday. In 2003, Spain beat Belgium 5-0.

Davis Cup: Troicki to open Serbia’s title defense
Viktor Troicki will start Serbia’s Davis Cup title defense by taking on India’s Rohan Bopanna in the opening singles of their first-round series Friday.
The draw Thursday also pitted Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic against India’s No. 1 Somdev Devvarman.
Troicki was the hero of Serbia’s 3-2 Davis Cup victory against France in last year’s final, winning the decisive rubber against Michael Llodra.
“I know what I can do against Bopanna and expect to win,” the 18th-ranked Troicki said. “I don’t expect hiccups in the series.”
Tipsarevic was more cautions, saying India should not be underestimated.
“India is a good team that beat Brazil in the playoffs,” Tipsarevic said. “Devvarman likes the hard surface.”
Doubles are scheduled for Saturday, while reverse singles are on Sunday.
Serbia’s No. 1 Novak Djokovic decided to skip the first-round series because of fatigue after winning the Australian Open and Dubai titles in recent weeks.
India also had a setback, with experienced doubles pair Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi withdrawing with injuries.

Melzer to open against Chardy in Davis Cup
Melzer to open against Chardy in Davis Cup
Jurgen Melzer is hoping to put pressure on France by winning Friday’s opening singles match against Jeremy Chardy in their Davis Cup first-round series.
Stefan Koubek will play Gilles Simon in the second singles match after the draw made on Thursday.
The 10th-ranked Melzer said that “it should stand 1-0 for us (after my match) so I can take some pressure off for Stefan and add some pressure for Simon.”
Melzer will team up with Oliver Marach for Saturday’s doubles against Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau, though captains can change that lineup as late as one hour before the match.
Austria has not been past the first round since 1995. Nine-time champion France lost last year’s final to Serbia.

Davis Cup: Cilic to open against Mayer
Davis Cup: Cilic to open against Mayer
Marin Cilic will face Germany’s Florian Mayer in the opening singles Friday in their first-round Davis Cup series.
The draw Thursday also pitted Croatia Open champion Ivan Dodig against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Cilic is recovering from a cold but said he is ready to face Mayer, who defeated him last year at Wimbledon and again in the Zagreb Open quarterfinals this year.
“I did lose to Mayer twice so far, but during our last encounter in Zagreb I have noticed some weak spots and I think we will find the right tactics,” Cilic said.
Mayer also said that “this match will be different.”
“Marin did not play his best tennis a month ago, he will have much more motivation this time,” Mayer said.
Doubles are scheduled for Saturday, while reverse singles are on Sunday.
The 2005 Davis Cup winner Croatia and three-time champion Germany meet for a fourth time in the World Group first round. In their three previous meetings, the home team has always won.
Germany leads the series 2-1.
Croatia’s coach Goran Prpic predicted that this time “details will decide.”

Davis Cup: Hajek to open against Golubev
Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic will face Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan in the opening singles match of their Davis Cup first-round series.
Hajek replaced Radek Stepanek, who was ruled out due to illness.
Thursday’s draw also put Tomas Berdych against Mikhail Kukushkin in the second singles on an indoor hard court at CEZ Arena.
“I’m 100 percent fit,” said the seventh-ranked Berdych, who retired against Novak Djokovic due to a leg injury last week in Dubai.
Berdych has never played the 63rd-ranked Kukushkin.
“I just want to focus on my tennis and my performance,” Berdych said.
In Saturday’s doubles, Czech pair Lukas Dlouhy and Jiri Vesely are set to take on Yuriy Schukin and Evgeny Korolev.
The 17-year-old Vesely made the Davis Cup squad for the first time, after winning the boy’s singles championship and the boy’s doubles at the Australian Open.
Reverse singles are scheduled for Sunday.
The winner of the series will face either Argentina or Romania the quarterfinals.
The Czechs reached the semifinals last year and the final in 2009. Kazakhstan is in the World Group for the first time.

Davis Cup: Soderling opens against Andreev
Davis Cup: Soderling opens against Andreev
Robin Soderling of Sweden will play Russia’s Igor Andreev in the opening singles match of their first-round Davis Cup series on Friday.
Soderling has won three titles this year and is the highest ranked player in the matchup.
“He’s a good player,” Soderling said of Andreev. “We’ve played a few times before and have had some tough matches.”
Thursday’s draw also pitted Joachim Johansson against Teymuraz Gabashvili in the second singles match.
Russia is without its two best players, 11th-ranked Mikhail Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko. Youzhny announced his Davis Cup retirement last month, while Davydenko asked not to be selected for the series.
Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt will face Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn in the doubles on Saturday. Reverse singles are scheduled for Sunday.
Sweden has a 4-1 record against Russia in the Davis Cup but lost the last matchup in 2002.
Soderling comes into the series on the back of 2011 tournament wins in Marseille, Rotterdam and Brisbane.
However, the Swedes lack depth in the squad. Both Russian players will expect to beat Johansson, ranked No. 749. The hard-serving 28-year-old Swede rose to No. 9 in the world in 2005 before a recurring shoulder injury almost ended his career.
“I feel I’m in very good shape and have a good chance in both my matches,” Johansson said.

Davis Cup - USA v Chile live preview
Davis Cup - USA v Chile live preview
Andy Roddick lead the American challenge in the first round of the Davis Cup this weekend against Chile.
There is quite a spirit of optimism ahead of America's Davis Cup campaign this year with popular and charismatic new captain Jim Courier at the helm. The Americans have their strongest side out for the tie with Roddick, John Isner and the Bryan brothers making up their squad.
However the South American sides are notoriously tough to beat at home and Chile have predictably laid a super slow clay court in Santiago in a bid to counteract the huge serves of Roddick and Isner.
However the Chilean squad is very weak and they are badly missing the injured Fernando Gonzalez. Ever a team player, Gonzalez is training with the squad this week but it is too soon for him to return to competitive action. Chile will be hoping that Paul Capdeville (ranked 165) and former Olympic champion Nicolas Massu (now ranked down at 241) can recapture former glory.
However, neither Roddick or Isner have a strong clay court pedigree. Roddick hates the surface though he does come into the tie on a confidence high after winning Memphis a couple of weeks ago. However Isner has been struggling for form.
As ever, the Bryan brothers are sure to be a jewel in America's crown. Clay is their weakest surface but they have still won the French Open doubles title in the past as well as making the final two more times.

Davis Cup - Sweden v Russia live preview
Davis Cup - Sweden v Russia live preview
Robin Soderling is in action as Sweden host Russia in the Davis Cup this weekend.
Both countries have a rich and illustrious Davis Cup history in particular the Swedes who won the Davis Cup seven times between 1975 and 1998 with the help of stars like Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Thomas Enqvist and Jonas Bjorkman. Russia have enjoyed more recent success, winning the competition twice in the past decade.
The current Swedish team is weaker than some of the world-beating sides they fielded in the '70s, '80s and '90s but they are still spearheaded by world number four Robin Soderling who has begun 2011 in the form of his life. Soderling has already picked up three titles in Brisbane, Rotterdam and Marseille and looks set to put pressure on the big three over the next few months.
However they lack a world class second singles player and have resorted to picking former top ten star Joachim Johansson, on yet another comeback. Johansson was one of the biggest servers in the world back at his peak in 2005 but his career has been crippled by injury. He played a challenger event last month, losing in the second round.
Russia would be favourites but they are badly missing Mikhail Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko. Instead their line-up is Teymuraz Gabashvili, Igor Andreev, Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov. Tursunov may the lowest ranked of the four but he is in fine form and made the semi-finals recently in Marseille so he may well play two singles rubbers.
Expect Soderling to win his two singles rubbers but this one could go down to the wire and Sweden's regular doubles pairing of Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt could well prove crucial.

Davis Cup - Croatia v Germany live preview
Davis Cup - Croatia v Germany live preview
Croatia takes on Germany in an intriguing first round clash in the Davis Cup this weekend.
Home advantage has proved decisive in previous clashes between these two countries andCroatia will be hoping that proves the case again this weekend on a fast indoor court in Zagreb. Croatia had a reasonably successful Davis Cup campaign last year, reaching the quarter-finals before losing emphatically 4-1 to eventual champions Serbia. Germany regained their World Group place with a 5-0 thrashing of South Africa in September's play-offs.
Cilic has returned to form over the past month, reaching the Marseille final and as a former two time Zagreb champion, Croatian fans will be hoping he can score two crucial singles wins. With Ivo Karlovic in decline, Ivan Dodig will be Croatia's number two and the big serving 25 year old could prove to be a dark horse after surprising everyone by winning the Zagreb title at the end of January.
Germany's hopes will rest largely on the shoulders of their number one Philipp Kohlschreiber. Kohlschreiber has produced some of his best performances in the competition before, notably scoring two singles wins against Spain on clay two years ago. However his form in 2011 has been average and he suffered a loss in Dubai to compatriot Philipp Petzschner.
Petzschner is always a threat on fast indoor courts and Germany will have a tough choice between him and Florian Mayer who has also enjoyed some impressive early season results.
Look for home advantage to see Croatia to a fairly close 3-2 win.

Iveta Benesova v Gisela Dulko WTA Monterrey Open match preview
Iveta Benesova v Gisela Dulko WTA Monterrey Open match preview
Iveta Benesova is up against Gisela Dulko in the first round of the WTA Monterrey Open
Iveta Benesova enters this week’s WTA Monterrey Open as the No. 7 seed, but faces a challenging first round matchup against Gisela Dulko. Benesova is currently the world No. 47, and has a 5-5 record this season. She’ll be aiming to improve on this, though she can’t expect an easy win here.
Dulko won last week’s WTA Acapulco Open, and now ranks just outside of the top fifty. If she can translate her clay court form into hard court form she’ll have a good chance on Tuesday. Despite her recent success, Dulko enters this match as the underdog, which makes sense given her head to head record against Benesova.
Bensesova has won 5 of the 6 meetings between the pairing, with victories spanning from 2003 to 2009. Dulko achieved her one victory over Benesova back in 2005, and will be attempting to snap a four-match losing streak here.
